Too Busy at the Country Club
None of the four leading presidential candidates decided to show up for the Baltimore Debate this evening. The organizers rightly decided to highlight the no-shows by putting 4 empty lecterns on the stage.
I think former VP nominee and rock-ribbed Republican Jack Kemp said it well when he quipped "What are we going to do--meet in a country club some day?"
The racism of these men--men who think they should run our nation--is profoundly disturbing. They should be called to account. And roundly mocked, too. Racism is not funny, but their buffoonish insensitivity to the needs of black, brown, gay and really any other kind of voter than the donor-capitalist guys they daily hang with is sadly comical in a pathetic sort of way.
Of course, those who did show up are not sterling exemplars of awareness and cultural openness. Sam "gay is not OK" Brownback saying that the no-shows were a "disgrace" rings a bit hollow to these ears. He went on to say “you grow political parties by expanding your base … what they’re doing is sending a message of narrowing the base.” Ready to let a few out-n-proud GLBTs into the base of the GOP, Sam? Hmmm, whats that silence?
Peace.

You mean Rich Whiteman didn't show up for the debate? Shocking! :)
Good words.
